Microbiology is such a vibrant area of
research that any book that aims to be current is certain to miss
important findings within months of publication. Academic journals
are the best source of current information and the following

There are several introductory textbooks on microbiology. M. T. Madigan, J. M. Martinko, D. Stahl, and D. P. Clark, Brock Biology of Microorganisms, 13th edition (San Francisco: Benjamin Cummins, 2010) is among the best, providing a wealth of information supported with excellent illustrations. It is particularly strong on the complicated topic of microbial metabolism. This book, like most microbiology texts, concentrates on prokaryotes and viruses. One of my previous books provides a contemporary view of biodiversity with emphasis on eukaryotic microbes: N. P. Money, The Amoeba in the Room: Lives of the Microbes (Oxford University Press, 2014). Photosynthetic eukaryotic microorganisms, or algae, are introduced in greater detail in L. Barsanti and P. Gualtieri, Algae: Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Biotechnology, 2nd edition (Boca Raton, Fla.: CRC Press, 2014).
